Lourinhã does not try to be a city. It is a town at a human scale, with everything you need close by — schools, hospital, shops — and an identity built over centuries of history, vineyards and sea.

Dinosaur capital

The Lourinhã cliffs are among the richest sites in the world for Upper Jurassic fossils. The Dinoparque and the Lourinhã Museum are essential stops — for the kids and for the parents.

Castle and old town

Lourinhã Castle, the 14th-century Gothic church of Santa Maria do Castelo and the Santo António convent give the town a historic centre you can walk in a single evening.

DOC Lourinhã brandy

One of only three wine brandies in the world with protected DOC status. The winemaking tradition is everywhere — cellars, restaurants, festivals — and it is part of the local identity.

Areia Branca on your doorstep

Areia Branca beach, a Blue Flag regular, is Lourinhã's postcard. A long stretch of sand, surfable waves and relaxed white houses above the cliff.

Areia Branca, the sand that named the beach.

Praia da Areia Branca is Lourinhã's flagship beach — a regular Blue Flag holder, a wide west-facing stretch of sand and one of the most beautiful bathing areas on the West Coast.

Steady waves for surfing and bodyboarding, a sunset worth the trip on its own, and clifftop boardwalks linking Areia Branca to quieter beaches such as Areal Sul, Caniçal and Peralta.

It is also here, in the surrounding cliffs, that dinosaur fossils keep turning up — walking the beach in front of our sites is, quite literally, walking on the Jurassic.

More than somewhere to spend the summer.

People who live in Lourinhã know the municipality has a calendar of its own — fairs, religious festivals, regional food and heritage that fills entire weekends without leaving town.

Lourinhã Museum

One of the most important palaeontology museums in the country. Mounted skeletons, dinosaur eggs found at Paimogo, and the story of this land told properly.

Dinoparque

An open-air park with over 180 life-size dinosaurs, on the largest palaeontological trail in Europe. A guaranteed weekend out at any time of year.

Santa Maria do Castelo church

A 14th-century Gothic church, one of the best preserved examples of mendicant Gothic in Portugal. From the castle above, views over the town and the sea.

Cellars and DOC brandy

Tastings and visits to local cellars. DOC Lourinhã wine brandy ages in oak barrels for years — worth trying with the people who make it.

Festivals and tradition

The Senhor dos Navegantes festival at Areia Branca, the Medieval Fair, food festivals. A community that keeps its traditions alive.

Regional food

Fresh fish from the Peniche market just up the road, Atalaia bread, convent pastries and DOC brandy with your coffee. Neighbourhood restaurants where you eat well for little.
